FAQ: Livescan and Ink/Slab Fingerprints

1Who needs Livescan?
All institutions and professions with applicants for employment, licensing or certification: Handgun Qualification License (HQL), Handgun Permit to Carry License, Security Guards, Teachers, Schools, Realtors, CPAs, Lottery Retailers, Stock Brokers, Contractors, DHMH/Nurses/Doctors/Hospitals, Attorneys, Caregivers for children and elderly, Gaming, Insurance, Pilots, Pharmacists, Volunteers, Dental Assistants, Others.
2Can I make an appointment for Livescan or just walk in?
Appointments are required on Tuesday and Friday from 10am-3pm. Walk-ins are welcome during our normal business hours on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am-5pm. As a walk-in customer Livescan services are performed on a first come first serve basis. For groups of more than two, we prefer you set up an appointment in order to avoid possible extended wait time.
3Do I need to do a Livescan again if I have already done it once or more before?
Yes. CJIS-Central Repository does not share your information with other agencies. It is against the law for different agencies to share confidential fingerprint results with each other. An applicant’s Livescan form acts as a release for a criminal history response to be sent to the specified requesting agency. This means that you must submit a new application each time a criminal history is requested of you. Therefore, you must go through the Livescan process again. Previous Livescan information CANNOT be utilized. You must be Livescan fingerprinted anytime you change employers when you work in the public school system.
4How long does it take for CJIS to process the fingerprints, and send results?
In most cases, the results from CJIS-Central Repository come back within 2-5 days. The results are either emailed or sent to the requesting agency listed on the Request for Livescan Service form.
5It’s been more than 15 days since I did my Livescan and I still have not received my response?
You can use the 365 Day FORM to request CJIS-Central Repository to conduct research
6Who provides me with a Request for Livescan Service Form? If I don’t have a request form, can you provide one?
The agency requesting the background check will provide you with the Livescan forms necessary to complete fingerprinting service. All Livescan forms must be provided to you by the agency that wants you to get fingerprinted. These forms contain information that is unique to each agency and this information must be provided before arriving to have your prints taken. IOTA also has available Livescan Pre-registration Form for your completion upon arrival. However, the agency must provide the applicant with the following details for Livescan services: Request Type, Authorization# and ORI#.
7What happens if my fingerprints are rejected?
Sometimes, fingerprints may be rejected for reasons beyond the Livescan Provider’s control. The most common reasons are the applicant's fingerprints have characteristics that are difficult to capture in the Livescan process. This would include items such as cuts, scars and calluses. If an applicant has fingerprints rejected on this basis, and they were originally scanned by our agency, we will rescan your fingerprints at no additional charge, provided the letter of rejection is supplied upon arrival.
